The Role of Democratic Lawyers in Defending Human Rights, Peace, and International Law: Key Outcomes of the IADL 19th Congress and the Leadership of Amar Thapa The 19th Congress of the International Association of Democratic Lawyers (IADL), held in Kathmandu, Nepal, from 18–20 July 2025, brought together more than 250 lawyers, judges, academics, and legal professionals from over 25 countries. Hosted by the Progressive and Professional Lawyers' Association (PPLA-Nepal), the Congress focused on the theme: "The Role of Democratic Lawyers in Promoting and Defending Peoples' Rights, Peace, and International Law in the Face of Fascism, Genocide, Militarization, and Wars of Aggression." The event reaffirmed the global legal community's commitment to protecting human rights, strengthening international law, and promoting peace through collective legal action. Amar Thapa's role in the Congress extends beyond ceremonial leadership. As the newly elected Chair of PPLA-Nepal, he represented Nepal's democratic legal community on an international platform. His leadership in organizing and opening the Congress demonstrated Nepal's capacity to facilitate global discussions on human rights and international law. By welcoming delegates from diverse legal systems and promoting dialogue on issues of global concern, Thapa contributed to strengthening Nepal's profile within the international legal community. His association with the Congress also highlights his commitment to democratic legal principles, the protection of human rights, and international cooperation among lawyers. While the communiqué does not attribute specific policy positions or speeches to him beyond opening the event, his leadership reflects support for the Congress's broader objectives of promoting peace, defending the rule of law, and encouraging legal solidarity across nations. Consequently, Amar Thapa emerges as an important figure in connecting Nepal's legal institutions with global efforts to uphold justice, democracy, and international legal norms.
